Ski Trip

Taylor had a 3 day ski trip with school. They were skiing in the Giant Mountains near Liberec on the Czech/Polish boarder. She spent the first day in ski school and the second two days enjoying the slopes. She learnt to go over jumps and can now do a 180 turn in the air ... maybe next time she'll make a 360! Good old Taylor also went down the black slopes, the first time on her back doing a starfish most of the way :+)

Terezin, a set on Flickr.

We visited the Terezin Concentration camp on a cold grey day, kind of fitting for the experience. Terezin was actually built between 1780-1790 and was a really amazing place, a fortress and hub of life for the people who lived there. Over the years it went through many changes and unfortunately its final moment in history is that of a Nazi Concentration Camp. Although Terezin was not a death camp, it is still tainted with the deaths/murders of 1000’s of Czech’s, Jews and Roma. We were all shocked with the images and stories that were dotted around the camp. It has certainly not been cleaned up for tourists! Although personal items and bedding have long gone the fireplaces still have burnt rubble in them the bathrooms are dirty. Terezin was a holding camp were an estimated 144,000 people transitioned through before being sent by train to the Auschwitz Extermination camp. Many died in Terezin(74,000) before reaching the extermination camps as the conditions were so bad and they were literally worked to death. There were numerous images of piles of dead bodies, mass graves and people being executed. Exact numbers are not known as the German soldiers burnt as much evidence as possible. We also visited the Muzeum Ghetta which is dedicated to the children of Terezin (we were not allowed to take photos here). About 15,000 children under the age of 15 died in Terezin, all of their names fill the first room and their stories and those who tried to help them are throughout the museum. I was shocked at proud photos of some of the most feared Nazi soldiers, they didn’t look evil or mean … just young men! All but one of the warders of Terezin was hung or given life imprisonment sentences after the war, all of which is documented and photographed (very chilling). The museums and monuments are filled with stories and images that we will never forget, we came away with many questions, thoughts and pondering many ideas and definitely thankful for the lives we have. Although the horrors of war are well documented … I really question how much man has really learnt when we turn our eyes on places like Mali and still see brutal killings by the 1000’s.

Inline Skating

On a Friday after school I help the Inline Skating club. There were a few kids away on the last day of school so Corban and Leo came for a visit and a turn. We were really impressed that Corban managed to get up off the ground and started to skate a little bit on her own. Leo could hold his feet together but needed to be held up.

Chinese New Year

Corban celebrated Chinese New Year at school. The kids worn yellow and red to school and put on a performance for the parents, danced in a dragon costume and had a shared morning tea. She is so funny, at home this week she asked if she could go to China and explained that she would need a cell phone when she is there in case she needs to call us!

Leo's Friends

Allan and Leo continue to hang out together, these are some of Leo’s friends that he has made at play group. Nice kids and parents! They visited the zoo again this week, always a highlight for Leo, he especially likes the crocodiles. Corban has a party invitation for a little girl at her school. I don’t think Allan and I have been so keen to attend a kids party before ... it is being held at the American Embassy (can’t wait to see all the little princesses being patted down by SAS soldiers, hilarious :+)

Lysolaje Reserve , a set on Flickr.

Much to our surprise the weather warmed up dramatically towards the end of this week. We went from being -15 to about 8. The sudden increase of 23 degrees meant the snow melted in 2 days. The funny thing is when the temperature hit about 3 degrees we all found ourselves peeling off our jackets because it was too hot! Acclimatisation is a crazy thing :+) Because the snow is gone we went for a walk in a nature reserve near our house this weekend. It is a pretty cool site that dates back 30,000 years to the Bronze Age. Over the centuries the reserve has been used for so many things including religious sites, theatre, living ... There is this sacred natural spring, shrine and moss/fungus everywhere. We will go back in the summer because there are about 200 cherry trees, bbq area and just a really nice place to visit.

Thought that you might like to see our apartment. It is 4 bedrooms, with a large living area however we have turned one of the bedrooms into an extra lounge. We want to make the 2nd lounge a bit of a hang out place for Tay and her friends or extra room for visitors. There is also a winter garden which is like a conservatory off this room, in time well put a table and chairs out there. The ceiling is about 3m high and everything is white, this is pretty standard in the CZ. Also there is always a large entrance way, now that we are here in the winter we understand why they do this ... it is so you can hang up all you clothes, defrost the buggy and have a place for the hats, gloves and scarves etc.
