From
Tallin to Riga took about 4 hours, it was an easy drive and we found our hostel
easily about 2km from the city centre.
Taylor’s
friend from school is from Riga so we met her at the Freedom Statue in the
city. Taylor went off and stayed the night with her. She enjoyed being treated to lots of
traditional food and had a personal tour of the old town, art nouveau buildings
and a museum.
While
she did this we wondered around old town picking out places on the map to visit
and also the waterfront. We were tired
from our early start in Tallin, so headed back to the hostel for dinner and
bed.
The next morning before
beginning our next bit of driving we visited the television tower in Riga which
gives a tour and view of the city. After
this we headed back into old town for another walk around before meeting up
with Taylor back in the square.
In
the square there was some footprints embedded in the concrete. Taylor’s friends mum explained that in 1989
when the Soviet Union still ruled Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania; the 3
countries came together and held hands across the countries to show that they
were united and wanted out of the Soviet rule and to get rid of communism. It was also a world record. It’s crazy because 1989 wasn’t that long ago!
From
here we drove another 4 hours to Palanaga, Lithuania for another home
exchange.
